AI godfather Geoffrey Hinton, who won the 2018 Turing Award for his pioneering work with the technology, now says he regrets what he has created. According to an interview with The New York Times, the professional left Google to speak freely about the risks AI could bring to society.

Hinton says he was happy with his job at Google until Microsoft announced that it was working with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to Bing. According to him, this sparked a “red alert” inside the offices, turning artificial intelligence into a big race that would be impossible to stop. Now, according to him, the world is filled with false images and texts, about which no one else would know how to say “what is the truth.”
However, he also reveals that if he hadn’t taken the first steps, someone else would have done it for him. “I console myself with the usual excuse: if I hadn’t done it, someone else would have done it. It’s hard to see how you can stop bad people in the market from using it in bad situations.” The company is currently working on Google Bard, its own version of ChatGPT, which is already assigned to its applications and is being finalized.
Artificial intelligence is something we’ve been imagining since the beginning of science fiction, and several works have been working on the concept – like The Terminator and even Disney’s Tron franchise. However, in the real world, its research and evolution began only recently. Geoffrey Hinton with two of his students (one of whom is the chief scientist of OpenAI) developed a neural sensor that could identify ordinary things like flowers, dogs, cats, etc. when analyzing several photos and the result, we can see on which he level at the moment.
At present, the professional simply wants to end the misinformation about artificial intelligence and make the virtual environment healthier. However, he warns that we may face more serious problems in the future. “The idea is that this thing will outsmart people. Some of us believe in it. Although most people think it’s a long way, I see that we’re on our way. I used to think it would happen in 30 or 50 years. I don’t think so anymore.”
