With a 13% increase in car thefts in New York this year (compared to the same period in 2022), the NYPD will take action to prevent this number from increasing. Their response is to encourage the public to use Apple’s AirTag to discreetly and easily locate their vehicle if it is stolen. In addition, 500 of them will be distributed free of charge to residents of the metropolis to help the population.

Mayor Eric Adams called the project “an impressive display of ingenuity.” Since the device is tiny, it can be placed anywhere in the car – preferably hidden so that intruders cannot easily get rid of it. At least, the user did not have time to find the car and report it to the police. In this way, they intend to reduce the number of crimes and keep the population safe, as this can also discourage attempts.

The distribution of the 500 is funded by the Association for a Better New York and will target the population living in Brooklyn. Only there was an increase of 24% and this is the focus of the authorities on public actions. Adams says this can make operations easier overall. “It’s a simple device, just this AirTag hidden inside a car where a person doesn’t know becomes an amazing tracking device. It’s easy to control. You can see in real time where your car is.”

It’s worth noting that the NYPD’s plan could create problems if the vehicle isn’t found promptly. The AirTag can beep if it is away from the user for eight hours and up to 24 hours. That is, if they don’t find the car/bike quickly, the signal will soon report the tracking device and allow the perpetrators to find and dispose of the material.

However, logically speaking, this is not the “unworkable” plan that the authorities are proposing. In the United States, AirTag costs $29 and can be easily deployed. It seems like a better idea than just seeing your car drive away with criminals and not taking effective action. Until the time of this writing, this action has only been announced by the government of the American city – as yet without replication of others in the USA or anywhere else on the planet.
