King Carlos will wear historical clothes at the coronation

Britain’s King Charles, who has spent his entire life fighting for environmental sustainability, will wear outfits previously worn by his predecessors, including his mother and grandfather, during his coronation ceremony next week.

Carlos, 74, will be crowned at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6 in a ceremony filled with religious and historical symbolism.

Many of the items he will wear, such as crowns and scepters, date back centuries, but Charles is also reusing some coronation robes made since 1821 “in the interests of sustainability and efficiency,” Buckingham Palace said on Monday.

Among the regalia that will reappear will be a coronation glove made for her grandfather, George VI.

“We have this wonderful, sustainable, eco-friendly king who recycles instead of buying a new glove,” said Deborah Moore, chief executive of Dents, who made the gold-embroidered glove for George VI’s coronation in 1937.

“It’s also part of the heritage, sort of a retrospective look at our very modern king,” said Moore, whose firm also made the coronation glove for Charles’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953.

During the ceremony, a white leather glove embroidered with gold metal thread is worn on the right hand of the monarch during the ceremony as a reminder that the sovereign must be careful when collecting taxes.

Carlos would also wear his grandfather’s “Colobium Sindonis”, a white linen tunic with a sword belt, avoiding the tradition of making a new one.

Other garments that Charles would wear during his service, with roots going back 1,000 years to his Norman predecessors, include the “supermantle”, a long-sleeved coat of gold silk made for King George’s coronation and worn by later monarchs such as Elizabeth II.

Over this he will wear the Imperial Robe, made of gold brocade and originally designed for the coronation of George IV in 1821.

“They are quite heavy to carry,” said Caroline de Guiteau, deputy inspector of the royal works of art. (Reuters).
