Total cloud spend is growing by more than $10 billion worldwide. This was found by the Synergy Research Group. In the first quarter of this year, companies spent more than $63 billion on cloud services. About 65 percent of that money goes to the big three cloud providers: Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

AWS remains by far the market leader. Synergy credits the American cloud provider with a market share of 32 percent. In second place is Microsoft with Azure, which receives 23 percent of the spend. Google is in third place with ten percent.

fight for crumbs

Other cloud providers have to compete for the crumbs. The following twenty companies have a combined market share of 26 percent. That leaves 9 percent that go to the very small players. Of these twenty smaller players, Synergy sees Oracle growing strongly, as do several Chinese players. Snowflake and MongoDB also make the list as strong growers.

For Google, the past has been a success story. For the first time, Google Cloud also made a profit. Despite the challenging economic times with slowing growth, the cloud is gaining popularity around the world. Gartner has already noted this. Individual companies are reviewing their spending and striving for greater efficiencies, but overall the cloud remains an attractive destination for organizations looking to modernize their legacy IT and reap the rewards.
