If you want a cheap and solid ergonomic wireless keyboard-mouse combination, among other things, you have to be quick now.

Did you know that Microsoft has been making computer hardware longer than the Windows operating system? The first mouse dates back to 1983, more than two years before Windows 1.0 saw the light of day. What followed were keyboards, joysticks, gamepads, and a host of other peripherals under the Microsoft brand name. Not anymore.

The hardware branch will not disappear, but the Microsoft name will. Everything will be Surface from now on. The current stock of hardware with the Microsoft name on it will be sold until nothing is left. According to The Verge, the decision is of an economic nature. Part of the responsible department is dismissed.

The current range of Surface accessories remain available, including mice, keyboards, styluses, docking stations and more. It’s not clear at this time if some of Microsoft’s existing peripherals will evolve into Surface. The current Surface line-up isn’t exactly beginner-friendly in terms of budget.

Especially for those who like to work with ergonomic hardware, this is a spanner in the works. A wireless set with a keyboard and mouse now costs EUR 119.95 including VAT. The Surface variant with just a wireless keyboard costs the same, but then you don’t have an ergonomic wireless mouse.

For now, Microsoft isn’t clarifying what will happen to the low-end hardware that doesn’t fall under the Surface banner today. The manufacturer may not find the foam worth the money and prefers to leave that market (with smaller margins) to bigger parties like Logitech.
