This measure is part of preparations for a possible increase illegal immigration when Covid-19 border restrictions are lifted this month.
Restrictions known as Title 42and which will be lifted on May 11, will allow US authorities to expeditiously deport non-Mexican migrants to Mexico without the possibility of applying for asylum.
Biden, a Democrat running for re-election in 2024, is facing record number of migrants caught illegally crossing the US-Mexico border since he took office in 2021.
Republicans have criticized Biden for reversing the former Republican president’s tough policies. Donald Trumpcurrent favorite of the party’s presidential candidate.
Troops supplemented the work border patrol United States, but will not conduct any police operations, said the official, who asked not to be named. Instead, they will monitor and enter data on the ground to support border officials, the official added.
