GitLab expands its partnership with Google Cloud. The aim is to create new functions for users through generative AI.
GitLab will leverage Google Cloud’s Vertex AI capabilities to develop new assets for its platform through generative AI. This technology controls Google Bard and ChatGPT, among others. By training with huge amounts of data, the system can produce completely new content.
A recent GitLab survey of 5,000 participants found that developers place security and efficiency as their top priorities. Those are two areas where artificial intelligence can be a useful tool.
The collaboration will enable GitLab to leverage Google Cloud’s extensive AI capabilities and resources. Vertex AI in particular needs to add value. Google claims its machine learning platform can train artificial intelligence with up to 80 percent less code than comparable platforms.
In this way, GitLab wants to continue to ensure the privacy and security of its users. The platform remains committed to protecting these users’ data and code on its own cloud; but combined with strong AI capabilities for software development.
A first product that GitLab will add to the offering thanks to the collaboration will be Explain this Vulnerability. Through AI, developers not only learn in plain text what a possible weakness in their coding could be, but also a range of possible solutions and recommendations.
This is possible because generative AI has mastered both coding and human language. In this way it can serve as a kind of interpreter between the developer and his project. In addition, the system can also research independently in order to suggest the necessary solutions to the user.
According to GitLab, artificial intelligence can make an important contribution to increasing efficiency in development, security and operation. This allows developers and those responsible for cyber security to concentrate on their core tasks and leave the “difficult” jobs to the AI.
