browser Google Chrome is preparing a change to its interface that may confuse some users who are used to the padlock icon in the address bar. Starting with version 117, due to be released in September, the icon will be replaced by a “settings” icon, which is two circles and two lines, in regards to the on/off buttons found on many configuration screens.

No more passwords: Google is rolling out a new authentication method; …
The technology eliminates the need for strong passwords and two-factor authentication codes.
The team behind the Chromium browser engine, which is behind Chrome, explains that the change is necessary because many people don’t understand the meaning of the lock icon, which was used to indicate that the connection was secure and encrypted using HTTPS. With the rise of HTTPS, having an icon is no longer enough to guarantee the security of a website.
The new badge, according to the developers, aims to make it clear that security should be the default condition on any website. By clicking on the settings icon, the user will still have access to the site’s security certificate information in addition to certain settings such as notification permissions and location sharing.

Changes in some respects are late. Two years ago, Google defaulted to HTTPS web connections in Chrome 90, a few months after Mozilla made a similar change to Firefox. The company adds that over 95% of page loads on Chrome for Windows use HTTPS. Like the floppy disk icon sometimes used to represent saved files, the padlock is a holdover from another era.
Changes will come to other browsers
This change is important because the Chromium engine is used in several browsers besides Chrome, including Microsoft Edge and Opera, and has almost 80% of the market. Chrome is used on about two-thirds of devices connected to the Internet. Other browsers are expected to follow Chrome’s lead and make similar changes soon.
It’s worth remembering that Chrome will continue to display a warning in the address bar whenever the site is not using HTTPS. The change only affects the padlock icon in the address bar.
