A 86% Ukrainian prisoners of war liberated from Russian captivity announced the victims physical torture or psychological their kidnappers, said Ombudsman of Ukraine Dmitry Lubinets today at a press conference in Kyiv.
“86% of prisoners of war were subjected to physical or psychological torture,” said Lubinets, who again accused International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) situation of widespread torture, which he condemns.

The Ukrainian Ombudsman rebuked ICRC his alleged failure to fulfill his mandate to ensure the proper treatment of prisoners of war as provided for Geneva Convention.
Lubinets argued that the “monopoly” that this international convention on the treatment of captured combatants grants ICRC when it comes to enforcement, may explain the perceived inefficiency of the organization in fulfilling its mission.

Kyiv repeatedly stated that Russian Federation violates the provisions of s. Geneva Convention. Many Ukrainian soldiers released as a result of the prisoner exchange reported ill-treatment and torture while in captivity in Russia.
Captured Ukrainian soldiers are systematically deprived of the right to communicate with their families. Many of them have no more information about their whereabouts than their freed captive comrades offer.
