SpaceX launched another large batch of Starlink Internet satellites and launched the returning rocket early Thursday morning, May 4. A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 56 Starlink rockets took off from the Florida Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral at 03:31 ET (07:31 GMT) on Thursday. The first stage of Falcon 9 returned to Earth about 8.5 minutes after takeoff and landed on SpaceX’s A Shortfall of Gravitas unmanned spacecraft in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast.

According to SpaceX’s mission statement, this was the seventh launch and landing for this particular launch vehicle. Falcon 9’s upper stage continued its journey on Thursday. If all goes according to plan, it will place 56 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit less than 65 minutes after launch.

Starlink is SpaceX’s ever-growing constellation of broadband satellites. According to Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist and satellite tracker who tracks this sort of thing, the company has launched more than 4,300 Starlink spacecraft to date, the vast majority of which are now operational.

Thursday’s launch marks the 29th orbital mission of the year for SpaceX and the 27th for Falcon 9. SpaceX’s two other orbital flights this year included the company’s powerful Falcon Heavy rocket.

The above figures do not include SpaceX’s most high-profile launch of the year, the April 20 test flight of Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. This mission was not designed to enter orbit and failed to do so, ending with the crew destroying the Starship approximately four minutes after launch.
