Apple supplier Cirrus Logic confirmed in a letter to shareholders today that the iPhone 15 Pro models will no longer have solid-state buttons.

“With all this, among the HPMS capabilities we’ve discussed, a new product we mentioned in previous letters to shareholders scheduled for release this fall is no longer expected to launch as planned,” the letter said. “As we currently have limited view of our customers’ future plans for this product, we are removing revenue associated with this component from our internal model.”

HPMS belongs to Cirrus Logic’s high-performance mixed-signal chips, which includes haptic drivers for the iPhone’s Taptic Engine. The Texas-based company said in a letter to shareholders last November that it continues to “build a strategic customer relationship” and hopes to “bring the new HPMS component to the smartphone market next year.” Apple is Cirrus Logic’s largest customer, accounting for 79% of its revenue in fiscal 2022.

In a call to investors today, Barclays analysts Blaine Curtis and Tom O’Malley said Cirrus Logic’s comments above most likely apply to solid-state buttons. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo initially said the iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with two additional Taptic Engines that will provide haptic feedback when solid-state buttons are pressed, with Cirrus Logic likely providing the relevant components.

Last month, Kuo said the iPhone 15 Pro models will no longer have the solid-state buttons that were initially rumored due to “unresolved technical issues before mass production.” He now expects devices to have traditional buttons that move when pressed. It is said that the Ring/Volume switch will be replaced by a button as mentioned earlier, which can be configured like the Action button on the Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple analyst Jeff Pu believes solid-state buttons will likely make their way back to next year’s iPhone 16 Pro models, but today’s comments from Cirrus Logic indicate that the vendor is not yet aware of these plans.
