On May 5, 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) canceled an international emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had been declared effective January 30, 2020, given a marked decrease in serious cases and deaths worldwide.
This was announced by the Director General of WHO. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesusafter the organization’s emergency management committee met this Thursday to review the current situation of a pandemic that, in more than three years, has affected at least 765 million people and caused about 20 million deaths.
Since the beginning of the year, the number of covid cases and reported deaths has been declining globally: in the last week of April, the WHO confirmed 630,000 cases worldwide and 3,500 deaths, while in January there were more than 1.3 million positives and 14,000 deaths, partly from -over the waves in China.
