A Microsoft cooperates with MY GOD in the company’s expansion from chips to AI processors, according to a Bloomberg News report on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. According to the portal, the company’s goal is to guarantee a large number of components.

The collaboration aims to expand AMD’s presence in the Nvidia-dominated AI processor market. AMD is also trying to diversify its customer base as well as reduce dependence on the PC and video game markets. Through the partnership, Microsoft can also reduce its reliance on Intel processors and expand its cloud computing offering.

After the report went live, AMD shares rose 9% on the news, while Microsoft shares rose about 1%.

According to the report, the software giant is providing financial backing to support AMD’s efforts and is working with the chipmaker on a processor for AI workloads called Athena. The report says that hundreds of employees of Microsoft’s silicon division are working on the Athena project.

In recent years, Microsoft has built its own chip division under former Intel chief executive Rani Borkar, and the group now employs about 1,000 people. Last month, The Information reported on Microsoft’s development of the Athena artificial intelligence chip and that it has already spent about $2 billion on its efforts.

Athena could be a key addition to Microsoft, which already offers AI services to enterprise customers, including data analytics, speech recognition and computer vision. With a custom AI engine, Microsoft can increase the speed and efficiency of its services, allowing customers to perform more complex analyzes and train machine learning models faster.

There is still no word on the release schedule for the Athena processor or when it will be available to the general public.
