Artificial intelligence (AI) developer Geoffrey Hinton said the latest technology could pose a “more urgent” threat to humanity than climate change.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.

Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as one of the “godfathers of artificial intelligence”, announced that he is stepping down from Alphabet after spending ten years at the company, saying he wanted to talk about the risks of technology without harming his former employer.

Hinton’s work is considered important for the development of modern artificial intelligence systems. He is the co-author of the fundamental paper “Learning Representations by Errors Backpropagation” in 1986, which became an important milestone in the development of neural networks, the foundation of artificial intelligence technology. In 2018, he was awarded the Turing Award for his research achievements.

But now, like a growing number of tech leaders, he is openly voicing his concerns about the potential threat artificial intelligence poses if machines become smarter than humans and take over the planet.

“I don’t want to ignore climate change. I don’t mean to say, ‘You shouldn’t worry about climate change.’ That’s also a big risk. But I think there may be a more pressing issue,” says Hinton.

He added that in the event of climate change it is very easy to advise everyone: stop burning carbon. However, it is unclear exactly what needs to be done to address the potential risks associated with AI.

As Ukrinform reports, US President Joe Biden met with the heads of leading companies in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), including Microsoft and Google, on Thursday and made it clear that they must ensure the security of their products.
