News VOD 18/23: ‘Irati’, sword and sorcery in the old Basque Country

VOD news brings you the best news of the week on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix… And as if it were a journey through valleys and mountains, Irati crowns a busier week than the previous one, in which, with exceptions, interesting releases are renewed on almost all platforms

Amazon Prime Video

For the third week in a row, Amazon Prime Video takes the top spot in the section, and this time it’s again due to the premiere of a film that is not its own original, but remained exclusive: Irati. But be careful, because if it refers to recent movie releases, it’s not the only one; actually, Crazy Heidi fell off a billboard not too long ago.

Irati

This time, the title of the post pretty well sums up what you’ll find in it Irati, a Basque film that premiered in theaters at the end of February and that Amazon has arranged for Prime Video. And good thing he did because Irati It’s one of the most refreshing Spanish films of recent times, and at the same time a full-fledged rarity… And I’m not just saying that because it was shot in Basque.

Irati is Paul Urkijo’s second feature film Alijo, which has already caught our attention Errementari (The Blacksmith and the Devil) a debut with many points in common with the one available now, for better or for worse. Or to put it another way, for better and better, because there’s really nothing wrong with either. Basically these are two fantastic stories very well set and quite original for what is the norm in these parts.

If the lower part Irati drinks from Basque mythology, the shape makes it a classic like Excalibur or very Conan. The use of a current reference, however hackneyed and even disrespectful it may sound a priori, we could mark Irati as Northerner by Eroski, an epic story of great technical invoice, whose most obvious flaws are the visuals. But don’t be mistaken, because it looks fabulous… and never better said.

Best of Irati, but is that it shows that this cinema can be shot in Spain. That and the hope that someone like Urkijo offers us to do even greater things in the future. As familiar faces, the face of its protagonist, Eneko Sagardoy, which we saw in the tremendous Country; and posh high schools like Itziar Ituño, a tough police inspector Cash robbery.

The film is well dubbed in Spanish by the way, although it is worth seeing in Basque because it was recorded that way, because it sounds more natural and because it gives it the ideal ancestral touch for the visual tone of the story. of Irati, a fantasy story based on a series of graphic novels. Make no doubt about it: everything that has a name exists.
