Sonos, an American electronics company, and Google will face each other in a lawsuit next Monday (8). A Sonos claims Google ‘stole’ smart speaker technology, patented by the company, and used in wireless audio devices such as the Google Home. The case has been in court since 2020., with the prosecutor’s question $90 million in compensation. The judge who heard the case complained that both companies were spending too much money on too little things.

Sonos sued Google in 2020 for “stealing” technology from its speakers. At the time, the two companies were working together to integrate Google’s music streaming service into Sonos products. It was at this point that the electronics company accused Big Tech of stealing its technology. The case is part of an extensive intellectual property dispute between the companies, as well as other lawsuits in the US, Canada, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
The judge says: “Dozens of schools can be built with the money spent”
Sonos initially sought US$3 billion in damages, but U.S. Judge William Alsup said the amount would be exorbitant. The company is currently asking Google for “only” $90 million. The situation is complicated because, as a defense strategy, Google has sued Sonos for patent infringement in California and the ITC (International Trade Commission). According to Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda, the case is due to “very specific features that are not commonly used” and Sonos “mischaracterizing our partnership and technology.”
ABOUT Judge William Alsup complained about the position of both companies. Last month, he said the lawsuit was “the epitome of the worst of patent disputes.” Companies spend a lot of money trying to use each other for a “small purpose,” he said. We don’t know how much companies spend on lawyers, but these types of lawsuits can involve millions in cash. Alsup only commented that a lot of resources have already been spent on the dispute. “As a result, dozens of schools could be built on the accounts of both companies, all teachers could be paid, and hot meals provided to children,” Alsup commented.
