The US Department of Defense has selected American companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon as part of its Evolved Strategic Satcom (ESS) program, an updated space communications system protected against nuclear attack. This was reported by SpaceNews.
Each of the companies received $30 million in funding from the United States Space Force to develop a prototype of a covert ground-based satellite communications system designed to operate in the event of a nuclear war. 18 months were allocated for the development of prototypes.
American companies Boeing and Northrop Grumman are competitors of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon in the development of ESS. Overall, the Pentagon plans to spend $6.5 billion on the program over the next five years. In the future, ESS satellites should replace the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) spacecraft.
