A fire at a Shell chemical plant in Deer Park, a suburb of Houston, Texas, rages for the third day in a row on Sunday, a company spokesman said.

The fire started on Friday afternoon as a result of an explosion at an olefins plant used to make plastics and rubber.

According to Shell spokesman Curtis Smith, the fire was extinguished within hours on Saturday morning before flaring up again overnight.

No one was injured in the fire. Nine people were tested and released from local hospitals on Friday for possible chemical exposure.

According to Smith, the fire is sprayed with water to keep it under control until the chemicals are used up.

Water can continue to be sprayed for up to 36 hours after the fire is out to cool nearby equipment, he said.

Smith said that air traffic control in neighboring communities “did not detect any harmful levels of chemicalsfrom fire.

Jennifer Hadaya, chief executive of Air Alliance Houston, said Shell’s statements about the risks to society were biased.

“History has shown that these early announcements are for industry public relations, not public health,” he said.
