Western Digital confirms theft of sensitive customer data

A month after it was announced that Western Digital had been hacked, the company confirms that attackers stole sensitive information from customers.

Hackers have stolen a database of sensitive personal information from Western Digital. The database contains customer information such as names, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. Cyber criminals stole the data after a hack that became public in early April. The attackers already claimed that they could steal sensitive information, but it took Western Digital until now to confirm this claim. Affected customers have been notified.

Encrypted Data

WD states that the database is encrypted and does not contain full credit card numbers. Still, the company warns its customers to be extra careful. After all, the captured data can easily be misused for realistic-looking phishing attacks. Western Digital has also taken its online shop offline. It should be available again on May 15th.

The attack on Western Digital remains shrouded in fog. First, the storage specialist took its MyCloud services offline for two weeks without properly communicating what was going on. The hackers allegedly demanded a ransom of at least $10 million from WD, which in turn had no intention of paying it.
