Microsoft and AMD would jointly develop a new AI chip to curb Nvidia’s dominance. Details are rare.
Microsoft is collaborating with AMD to develop AI processors. Bloomberg knows that. According to well-informed sources, both companies want to offer an alternative to Nvidia’s GPUs. Today, Nvidia leads the way when it comes to hardware for AI workloads. Therefore, due to the lack of competition, the price of such chips is quite high. Alternatives could change that.
Details at Bloomberg are scarce. Microsoft would help AMD better optimize its GPUs for AI. Microsoft itself discovers that the collaboration has something to do with Athena: a project in which Redmond plans to build an inference chip itself.
Huge scale
The extent to which AI chips are needed now and certainly in the future is unprecedented. Just to train ChatGPT, Microsoft built a supercomputer in Azure with ten thousand Nvidia GPUs. When trained models are used at scale, exponentially more hardware is required. An alternative to Nvidia’s chips is helpful here, if only because it creates a larger range of suitable chips.
