Competition in consumer electronics is heating up. Many brands such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo are competing to reach more users with smartphones and similar products. Of course, it’s a lot of fun for us tech enthusiasts to watch this race. International Data Corporation (IDC), which usually produces reports measuring market competition, recently released a report on its global tablet shipments for the first quarter of 2023. Accordingly, Apple once again surpassed Samsung in the competition. Details are here…

Global tablet shipments fell 19.1% in the first quarter of 2023.

In the first quarter of 2023, IDC’s global tablet shipments decreased by 19.1% (compared to the same period last year) to 30.7 million units. Reflecting shipments of 30.1 million units in the first quarter of 2019 and 31.6 million units in the first quarter of 2018, this decline is reminiscent of pre-pandemic levels.

Global tablet shipments in Q1 2023:

Company 1Q23 Unit deliveries 1Q23 Market share 1Q22 Unit deliveries 1 square meter market share is 22 years old annual growth
1. apple 10.8 35.2% 12.1 31.8% -10.2%
2.Samsung 7.1 23.1% 8.3 21.8% -14.3%
3. Huawei 2.0 6.6% 2.2 5.9% -9.7%
4. Lenovo 1.9 6.2% 3.0 7.9% -37.1%
5. Amazon.com 1.4 4.6% 3.7 9.8% -62.0%
others 7.5 24.4% 8.7 22.9% -13.8%
in total 30.7 100.0% 38.0 100.0% -19.1%

All major tablet vendors experienced declines in the first quarter of 2023. Apple and Samsung continued their dominance, accounting for about 58% of the tablet market. Huawei moved up to third place, while Lenovo and Amazon ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. The reason for such a sharp decline in almost all products is quite understandable. As of 2023, the Covid-19 pandemic has ended and life has returned to normal all over the world.

As apps like work from home and online learning dwindle, the consumer frenzy has slowed somewhat. Another reason is rising inflation and economic difficulties around the world. Still, experts are still optimistic about the future of the tablet market.

Jitesh Ubrani, IDC’s director of research for Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, remains optimistic despite the drop in tablet shipments. It points to growing interest from vendors, including the re-emergence of Google that could potentially improve the performance of Android tablets and integrate tablets into smart home systems.
