Nearby Sharing (or Nearby Sharing, as Google refers to the feature by both names) is the long-awaited response from a search engine to AirDropa technology that has been present in Apple devices for ten years and which, despite offering a really simple function, or because of that, is extremely useful to the point that many users use it almost daily.
It is true that Near Share is not new in itself because It has been present in the Android ecosystem for a long time. However, for some reason I never fully understood, it was reluctant to move to desktop operating systems. First of all, logically, ChromeOS, but given the excellent relationship that Windows and Android have had for several years, also Microsoft’s operating system, which shows quite a lot of effort (and I think that’s obviously something very positive) in strengthening the ties between the two YOU.
Fortunately, this lack began to change in September of last year, when Google announced that in a few weeks Share would be around This would already allow the exchange of files between Android and ChromeOS devices. In this way, the ecosystem of devices with Google agents finally gave, although the function was still in beta, it was at the level that Apple already provided with AirDrop.
But things couldn’t stop there, so a few weeks ago Google announced that it was starting to roll out Nearby Sharing on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Great news, but it was limited in scope, as it was only deployed in the United States in that first phase. However, it seems that the tests must have gone pretty well, because as we can see on the support site, now Nearby sharing is now available almost everywhere in the world. What of course still doesn’t have global coverage is support, but considering how simple it works and, at least in the tests I’ve done, seems to work, that’s beside the point.
As we already told you in April, this new implementation of Nearby Sharing is compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11. To use it, just download the Windows app from its website, install it, sign in, and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both devices. So if you want to transfer a file from your computer to your smartphone, just drag it to the middle of the Nearby Sharing window. And when it comes to transfers in the opposite direction, you’ll need to select the appropriate file, enter the sharing menu on Android, and Nearby Sharing will appear as one of the options. Simpler impossible.
