He added that prosecutor Neil Saul Gamero of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Province of Castile was also involved, and that the operations were carried out by a large police contingent that reached the remote mountainous area where the Yanaquihua mine is located. in the province of Arequipa Condesuios.

According to official information, in the next few hours the bodies will be delivered to central morgue from the city of Arequipa, more than a thousand kilometers from Lima, where a legal autopsy will be performed before being handed over to their relatives.

Condesuyos prosecutor Giovanni Mattos explained that a criminal investigation had been carried out in the area and, among other procedures that are part of the investigation, statements from representatives of the contractor company and the mining company will be taken.

Mattos clarified that the work of recovering the bodies was difficult because the rescuers had to wait until the poisonous gas dissipated in the area.

Radio station RPP reported that the mining company also confirmed that the rescue work had already been completed and that family members were allowed access so they could identify the victims.

The deaths of 27 mining company workers were confirmed on Sunday by the Peruvian government, which expressed “condolences to the relatives and residents of Arequipa.”

He added that the interior and defense ministries had been working “from the very beginning of this tragedy to rescue and transport the bodies” at the Yanaquihua Esperanza I mine, where a fire broke out early Saturday morning as a result of a short circuit. deposit owner.

The owner of the mine reported a fire at the PNP, so ambulances and medical rescue personnel immediately rushed to the mine.

Footage shared by local media and social media shows a large plume of black smoke coming out of one of the mine shafts, while it was reported that workers were at a depth of about 80 meters at the time of the accident.

The mine is owned by Yanaquihua SAC, an official company that brings together small-scale mining producers involved in the extraction of gold and other metals, according to the company’s website.

This information was confirmed by the regional governor of Arequipa, Rogel Sanchez, who expressed “solidarity and condolences” to the relatives of the deceased.

“This is a company that has formalities of the case, in labor activity. If there was some situation that went beyond the legal framework, the investigation will show it,” he said.
