A Microsoft was looking for ways to boost ads for their products on Windows 11. According to research on the latest Insider builds by researcher Albacore, ads will be displayed on the system settings home page for products Microsoft 365 soon. At the top of the Home tab, Settings displays a banner prompting non-subscribers to “Try Microsoft 365”.
It is available to Windows Insiders who choose a distribution channel.
Beneath the ad is a section that shows the current storage status of the user’s OneDrive account, followed by a section with security tips so users can protect their accounts. This isn’t the only version of the Home tab that’s been seen: another version shows storage information first and below it prompts you to sign in to Microsoft 365.
The last update seen during this investigation on the Insider Build Options tab is a small notification on the Accounts tab that displays information about products that have been installed on the user’s system and are no longer supported, such as Office 2013.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has included ads in its operating system: Start menu ads have been in Windows 11 since November 2022. full-screen advertisements presented to users in February.
According to Albacore, this is part of build 23451. Microsoft hasn’t made any official announcement about including this ad in Windows 11, but the company is expected to continue exploring ways to promote its products on the operating system.
