eVTOL: Embraer could use ‘flying car’ to accelerate transition to electric aircraft

It’s not news that Embraer aims for eVTOL segmentpopularly known as “Flying cars“. This time the news is that the manufacturer plans to useelectric VTOL aircraft accelerate the transition to a new standard for aircraft powered by electric or hydrogen energy. The goal is simple to understand: to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation sector.

The goal of the transition is to drastically reduce carbon emissions from the aviation sector.

A Embraer is in business with a startup Eva Air Mobility. It is expected that the first aircraft in the segment could be certified in the next three years, until 2026; however, the first test flight is expected in mid-2024. Daniel Mochidlowerexecutive director of Embraer-X, during Web Summit Rio, in an interview with g1 he stated:

“This concept will look like a big drone because it doesn’t have to take anyone on board yet. This will be the culmination of a number of other tests (…) We see eVTOL as the first step towards decarbonizing aviation.”

For those who are not in the subject, Embraer-X this is an area reserved for projects that may soon be part of Embraer’s plans – or, in some cases, may become other companies. This is the technological hand of the manufacturer.

The Embraer project is in line with plans to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The plans described above are fully consistent with the long-term plan of the International Civil Aviation Organization. (ICAO), which is working to achieve zero carbon emissions over the next 27 years, by 2050.

ABOUT CEO from Embraer-X notes:

“To do this, we will have to develop a lot of new technologies. One of them is electrification (…) Eva is very important for us to pass on to Embraer this super valuable knowledge on how to design, operate and maintain an all-electric aircraft.”

The maturation of eVTOL is consistent with the old ethos of Embraer, which has been exploring ways to move the sector towards a reality where electric (or hydrogen-powered) aircraft are viable. Regardless of the potential of these ideas, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming years.
