The White House confirmed on Tuesday that United States (EU) President Joe Biden had already been on the phone with his Mexican counterpart, Andres Manuel López Obrador, although he did not provide details of the conversation.

Lopez Obrador himself announced yesterday that he plans to speak with Biden on Tuesday to discuss issues such as migration, fentanyl and economic cooperation.

The conversation takes place before the end of Title 42 immigration rules on May 11. a measure taken by former Republican President Donald Trump (2017-2021) and then continued by Democratic President Joe Biden to expel migrants.

This measure, announced during the covid-19 pandemic, allows the US government to automatically deport most undocumented immigrants arriving at its southern border, preventing them from applying for asylum.

Similarly, the call is also part of the controversy over fentanyl trafficking, which resulted in Biden being asked by members of the U.S. Republican Party to designate the cartels as “terrorist organizations” and prosecute them with the deployment of U.S. military forces even inside Mexico.

In response, López Obrador called supporters of the use of the United States Army in Mexico “weaklings and interventionists” and concluded that American families were responsible for fentanyl overdoses due to not hugging their children enough.

Fentanyl is a pain reliever 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine and is often used to treat conditions such as cancer.

However, it is also used to enhance the effects of heroin and is currently responsible for about 200 deaths per day in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
