This week, a metal object believed to be a meteorite punctured a hole in the roof of a home in central New Jersey, crashed into hardwood floors and bounced around a bedroom. The family that owned the house found a black stone the size of a potato that was still warm in a corner.
In Hopewell, north of the state capital Trenton, police said no one was injured and there was no major damage to the residence. According to police, the object measures about 4 by 6 inches (10 by 15 centimeters) and weighs about four pounds (1.8 kilograms).
The owner of the house, Susie Cope, said she thought someone had thrown a stone into her upstairs bedroom on Monday, but soon realized that wasn’t the case. The family plans to meet with an astrophysicist who will investigate the object further.
“We think it was a meteor passing through here, because it was completely damaged, it hit the ground, bounced up to this part of the ceiling, and eventually stopped there,” Cope told KYW-TV in Philadelphia. “I touched that thing because it thought it was a random rock, I don’t know, and it was hot.”
Cope said that hazmat officials came to his house to test with his family to see if they had been exposed to any radioactive material, but all the tests came back negative.
