How v-Infra migrated a database from on-premises to multi-cloud in five days

What if your customer wants to migrate completely to the public cloud, already relies on Azure and largely relies on Oracle databases? What if you only have a month to do it? V-Infra tells how it successfully met this challenge together with Arrow and OCI.

At the social housing company Everecity, the IT infrastructure runs in the cloud. “Mostly in Azure, to be precise,” says Thibaud Varrasse. He is IT infrastructure and cloud architect at implementation partner v-Infra. “But not all.”

Oracle database to the cloud

Everecity already had an infrastructure with Microsoft’s cloud and wanted to migrate further to the public cloud. In itself not a problem, except for the databases from Oracle. Varrasse: “Oracle’s database licenses are calculated on a CPU basis. Virtualizing the database servers in the cloud is therefore actually priceless.” V-Infra therefore had to look for a quick solution to get the databases into the public cloud and connect them to Everecity’s ERP system, which was already running in Azure .

“How do you integrate something like that into the cloud? In turn, we turned to Arrow, who is our regular partner for everything to do with cloud service providers.” It quickly became clear that the solution to the problem lay with Oracle itself.

Pierre Furnal, Country Manager Arrow Belux, clarifies. “Arrow helps a community of 3,000 partners to provide modern IT solutions for the end customer.” The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) plays an important role in this. “We believe in OCI’s ability to modernize IT and provide cloud services to customers.”

multicloud solution

In Everecity’s case, Arrow v-Infra pointed to Oracle Database Services for Azure. This is a solution where the Oracle database advantageously runs within the OCI Cloud environment. From there, the database is seamlessly integrated into Microsoft Azure and all solutions running there. For example, Everecity’s ERP system can easily work with the databases from an external cloud environment running within OCI without high license costs.

“Before we could offer the solution, v-Infra had to become an Oracle partner,” Varrasse recalls. “Arrow guided us through this administrative process.” From then on, the task was to migrate the Oracle database from an on-premises environment in a colocation data center to the cloud.

“We started on a Wednesday and the next Monday we were almost done,” laughs Varrasse. “All we had to do was create the clients and restore the database dump to OCI. The linking of Azure also ran smoothly. It was actually super easy to connect the database on OCI to the external cloud.” For example, v-Infra transformed Everecity’s infrastructure into a modern multicloud environment in just under a week.

hyperscalers

According to Jan Ronse, Managing Director of Oracle Belux, this simplicity is one of the strengths of OCI. “We firmly believe in multicloud. We respect that a customer runs one workload with one provider and the other with us.” Projects and results at the end customer are the main drivers for Oracle and OCI. Oracle Database Services for Azure and the simplicity that comes with it is a key example of the multi-cloud role that OCI is taking on. This role also has a very technical side with Oracle Interconnect for Azure. This connection between OCI and Azure makes it possible to integrate the databases on OCI and applications on Azure.

Ronse points out that OCI is more than an extra. “OCI is a complete solution. Security is built in right from the start and we offer computing power, storage, database and analysis at a very attractive price.” The approach works: Gartner now describes Oracle as a hyperscaler.

lessons for the future

For v-Infra, Oracle’s approach means successful and fast migration for the customer. “Now that we’ve done this migration and that we’re an Oracle partner, we can help more parties,” notes Varrasse.

“Many organizations are reluctant to migrate to the cloud, in part for fear of complexity or high cost. However, working with Everecity shows that such migrations can be accomplished quickly and smoothly.”

Simplicity through ArrowSphere

For its part, Arrow was able to play off its relationship with Oracle in the project, but also its own product ArrowSphere. Furnal: “ArrowSphere contains an extensive catalog of cloud solutions from many different providers. Partners can select and roll out the right service with one click.” ArrowSphere is simply a kind of marketplace where a partner can find cloud services from all major players, including OCI, in a vendor-agnostic context.

“ArrowSphere was also important to us,” confirms Varrasse. Finally, via the Arrow solution, v-Infra can centrally manage the customer’s multicloud environment, including invoicing and license costs. So there is no added complexity in terms of financial management by choosing a multicloud environment.

All’s well that ends well: “Our customer wanted a pay-as-you-go solution in the public cloud for the entire infrastructure. Thanks to Arrow’s help and OCI’s interconnectivity, we were able to solve this in a flash,” concludes Varrasse.
