The man widely considered the godfather of artificial intelligence left his position at Google just days ago to speak openly about the dangers of artificial intelligence. And he doesn’t let grass grow over it.

Of course, with all that baggage, few people know the risks of artificial intelligence better than Hinton. However, the solution is not so clear cut.
The man isn’t the only big name to express concern over the issue. Globally, increasing attention is being paid to the risks posed by generative AI. For example, last month there was an open letter calling for artificial intelligence research to be paused for at least six months. It has been signed by thousands of people from the tech industry, including Elon Musk; however, one of the founders of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
A European law is currently being worked on that is intended to make the operation of artificial intelligence significantly more transparent. Recently added was a proposal to require companies like OpenAI to disclose proprietary data they use to train generative AI.
The EU also called on US President Joe Biden to hold a global summit on artificial intelligence with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Biden himself is already in talks with various CEOs of relevant tech companies (including OpenAI’s Sam Altman) in the White House to discuss the topic.
According to Hinton, it is indeed important that politicians work closely with the technology industry. However, he’s not a fan of this six-month hiatus; According to him, it is important to keep researching, but then investigating what can be done about the too-rapid growth of artificial intelligence. He even called the idea of this break unrealistic.
