The latest report from Counterpoint Research, a technology segment research firm, notes that the U.S. smartphone market fell 17% in the first quarter of 2023. The reason is weak consumer demand caused by global economic problems. However, despite this, Apple’s iPhone increased its market share to 53%.

For this to happen, even with a 17% drop in the US market, that means US users are moving away from Android in favor of iOS. What’s interesting about the Counterpoint Research report is that it points to Samsung maintains the second position with the same share of 27%.. That is, other manufacturers with the Android system eventually gave way to Apple.

Motorola and TCL in decline

Among other manufacturers that use the Android operating system on their devices, Counterpoint Research notes that Motorola has fallen from 10% to 8%, TCL from 3% to 2% and “other manufacturers” from 9% to 8%. Unfortunately, the study does not specify who the other manufacturers will be (probably Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo numbers). On the other hand, Google remains with a 2% market share.

It is important to note that the report is based only on US consumer data, hence the dominance of Apple and the absence of other major manufacturers such as Xiaomi. According to senior analyst Maurice Klene, Samsung has maintained its position thanks to the results of the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy A14 5G. “While prepaid brands have significantly reduced shipments compared to last year, there have been some glimmers of hope. Samsung Galaxy S23 shipments are up double digits from last year, while the Galaxy A14 5G performed exceptionally well.“.

Finally, despite Apple’s significant presence in the smartphone segment with the iPhone, the data indicates that Samsung’s foldable devices are the leaders in the foldable segment. In this area, the South Korean manufacturer continues to dominate the market in America, but should face some competition with the arrival of the Pixel Fold and other devices.
