The first foldable smartphone in Google’s Pixel series is a fact.

At its own I/O developer conference, Google introduced three new products in the Pixel series, each equipped with the Tensor G2 chip; It was introduced last year. By far the most important of the three is Google’s first foldable smartphone: As the name suggests, the Pixel Fold is also a tablet when opened. In addition, the series continues to expand with a tablet that does not fold into a phone and a new smartphone that does not fold into a tablet.

In fact, the star of this product presentation is a 7.6-inch tablet that opens and closes like a book. When closed, it becomes a 5.8-inch smartphone. The basis of this folding chassis is a stainless steel hinge that is basically suitable for at least 200,000 folding processes. According to Google, it’s stable enough to use the device half-open; then it effectively serves as a mini laptop. That’s almost three devices for the steep price of $1,800.

Both screens feature OLED technology with a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. With the larger screen, you’ll enjoy a slightly higher resolution than in the smartphone form: 2,208 x 1,840 pixels. Each screen is joined by an 8.3 MP camera. As a smartphone, there are also three extras: a main lens with 48 MP, an ultra wide-angle lens and a telephoto module. The latter two both work at 10.8 MP.

The processor is supported by twelve gigabytes of RAM, but the device can also be configured with 256 GB or 512 GB. All of this runs on a 4,800 mAh battery. According to Google, it will last more than 24 hours (in certain situations) on a full charge.

Unfortunately we have to announce (now customary) that this device is not yet available in Belgium and the Netherlands. In doing so, Google remains true to its strategy of treating our country as an insignificant second-class market.

Pixel tablet

The tablet was given the obvious name Pixel Tablet and costs $499. The device has an 11-inch lens, eight megabytes of RAM and you can choose between 128 or 256 GB of storage.

For just under five hundred dollars, Google also offers a magnetic dock with two speakers and a charging system, which also serves as standard. In this way, the Pixel Tablet becomes a smart screen that you can use, for example, to control your other smart devices in your home.

The new smartphone comes on the market under the evocative name Pixel 7a and for at least five hundred dollars. That is certainly a tenth more than the predecessor 6a. It’s a mid-range phone with a 6.1-inch screen and a 90Hz refresh rate. According to Google, the screen is a quarter brighter than the 6a in direct sunlight.

Other upgrades include a 64MP lens camera and even more wireless charging support. According to Google, a single charge of the 7a lasts up to three days in battery saver mode.
