Victims of O’Connor’s hacking attacks included famous people like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Joe Biden and Barack Obama. The hacker could have done serious emotional harm to his victims, even going so far as to harass, threaten and demand money from them.
Arrest details
The arrest of the 23-year-old criminal took place in Spain two years ago, after he was found to be involved in theft in July 2020. O’Connor and his hacking team used various methods to gain control of the target accounts. They tricked the subscribers of these accounts by promising to double their money. Additionally, using a method known as SIM swapping, they accessed the social media accounts of two prominent media figures and threatened to post private photos and other personal information.
Operating online under the pseudonym PlugwalkJoe, O’Connor pleaded guilty to a variety of crimes, including hacking, extortion, stalking, fraud and money laundering. The most serious offenses carry a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. O’Connor’s sentence is scheduled for June 23.
The Twitter hack, which affected more than 130 users, also spread to numerous cryptocurrency accounts, including popular ones such as:
- @bitcoins,
- @coindesk
- @fluctuation,
- @coinbase,
- @binance.
All hacked accounts posted the same message claiming to be partners with CryptoForHealth and offering to return 5,000 BTC to the community.
This is not the first jail time in the case
In July 2021, Graham Ivan Clark, a Florida teenager believed to be the ringleader of the theft, was sentenced to three years in a correctional facility as part of a plea deal. Clark, who was only 17 at the time of the charges, received the maximum penaltyunder the Florida Juvenile Delinquency Act.
According to a 2020 report by Interest Engineering, the attack by this infamous gang is considered the most significant privacy and security breach in Twitter history.
Twitter brings major changes
Elon Musk, Twitter’s new CEO, meanwhile, announced plans to strengthen the platform’s security features on Wednesday. Musk said that Twitter will soon encrypt messages, allowing users to communicate securely.
He also said that the latest version of the Twitter app will allow users to reply to any message in the stream and use emoji reactions, not just the last message.
Musk also noted that encrypted personal messages will be available soon, followed by voice and video chat features that will allow users to communicate anywhere in the world without having to share their phone number.
