Google Workspace AI

During the I/O conference, Google introduced Duet AI: an AI assistant that helps you use Workspace applications.

As early as March, Google announced that it wanted to spice up the workspace ecosystem with AI functions, but the plans were still quite vague at the time. As expected, Google provided some clarity during the I/O. And that’s not too late, because Microsoft is already introducing its Copilot to a wider audience.

The AI assistant for Google Workspace will be called Duet AI and will be available for various applications. Google initially wants to integrate it into the Gmail mobile app. This is where Duet AI can help you when writing emails: a prompt of just a few words is enough for the AI to compose a complete, professional email.

But Google Slides, Meet, Docs and Sheets will also be able to benefit from the possibilities of Duet AI. For the presentation app, Google is unpacking a Dall-E-like function that converts words into images. Duet AI takes care of the visual representation of your presentation. You can also use this feature in Meet to create creative backgrounds.

As for Google Sheets and Docs, all you have to do is ask Duet AI to schedule a day trip, for example, or organize the accounting, and the AI will do the rest. You can find the tool in a chat window.

Three models for Vertex

That is not all. AI was the theme of I/O’s opening day, so Google also had some news about Vertex, a cloud platform for training AI models. Google will make three new base models available through this platform.

The first is Imagen, the AI image generator that is an alternative to Dall-E and is therefore used in Slides and Meet. Imagen converts text prompts into images, but can also do the reverse and create captions. These subtitles are available in more than 300 languages.

Chirp converts speech to text in over a hundred different languages. With this tool, language barriers become a thing of the past and you can also use it to subtitle videos. The third assistant is called Codey and helps developers with coding, but can also answer questions from operations teams and security experts. You can learn more about the smart coding tool in this article.
