Apple plans to launch an iPhone with a MicroLED display

As part of its strategy of supplier diversification and technological innovation, giant Apple takes firm steps in developing its own microLED technology. The company’s goal is to offset its dependence on OLED panels from Samsung, LG, BOE or other vendors on the market.

The Korea Institute for the Promotion of Information and Communication Technology (IITP) has published an analysis of the impact of the transition to microLED display technology on the display business of Samsung or LG. An initial reduction in orders is possible as Apple develops the technology internally, according to the report.

According to Korean business media, Apple plans to introduce microLED panels in its Watch Ultra series, following the strategy adopted when moving to OLED screens, according to Digitimes. This change could happen as early as next year, and after testing the performance of microLED technology in action, Apple intends to gradually replace OLED panels in its iPhones and even iPads with microLED panels.

Apple wants to take advantage of microLED

The benefits of microLED are huge, such as a significant reduction in power consumption, resulting in longer battery life, even at the same capacity as the batteries used in OLED screens. In addition, the panels have excellent average brightness and high contrast ratio comparable to OLED displays.

As mentioned earlier, Apple has been investing in microLED R&D for years in the hope that one day the technology could replace OLED panels. The company is currently about 70% dependent on Samsung and several other smaller suppliers.

There are reports that Apple has scaled back its microLED ambitions, planning to use its first such panel in the Watch Ultra 2, which is slated for release next year alongside the iPhone 16. Like LG and 3M, sheds light on Apple’s supposedly cautious approach to the introduction of microLED screens in their devices.
