This week, Google announced the release of PaLM 2, an artificial intelligence language model whose main goal is to become one of OpenIA’s GPT-4 competitors. The new AI version comes with a significant improvement over PaLM 1, at least that’s what the company promises.

According to Google Senior Director of Research Slava Petrov during a roundtable with journalists at the Google I/O conference, PaLM 2 represents significant improvements in several text tasks, covering areas such as reasoning, coding and translation.

“PaLM 2 models are stronger in logic and reasoning through rigorous training in logic and reasoning. They are also trained to work with multilingual text spanning over 100 languages,” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said during the I/O conference. the company held this week

As an illustration of its multilingual capabilities, Google Senior Research Director Slav Petrov demonstrated PaLM 2’s ability to understand idioms in multiple languages. He used as an example the German phrase “Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof”, which literally translates to “I only understand the station”, but more broadly means “I don’t understand what you are saying” or, in an English context: “For me it is everything is in Greek.

PaLM 2 is already being used by Google

In a study describing the capabilities of PaLM 2, Google engineers stated that the system’s language competence is “sufficient to teach the language in question.” They noted that this capability is partly a result of the greater inclusion of non-English text in the model’s training data.

Like other large language models that require significant time and resources to develop, PaLM 2 is not just a single product, but a family of products. This family includes different versions of the model that will be deployed in both enterprise and consumer environments.

The system is available in four size options, named Gecko, Otter, Bison and Unicorn, in ascending order, and is tailored to domain-specific datasets to meet specific enterprise customer needs.

Internally, Google PaLM 2 is already being used to improve 25 features and products, among which the company’s experimental Bard chatbot stands out. Updates to Bard include improved coding capabilities and increased support for multiple languages.
