Do you still have a mountain of unanswered emails? Then ask Gmail for help.
Google announced Duet AI at I/O 2023: a collection of A-features for the workspace empire. With Duet AI, writing texts, filling out spreadsheets or creating presentations will be less time-consuming. You specify what exactly you want in a short prompt and the AI will do the rest. For Gmail, the most popular workspace app, Google introduces “Help Me Write”.
The timing for the introduction of AI-generated emails could not be better for Google. A recent survey by competitor Microsoft, of all companies, revealed that employees spend a lot of time answering e-mails or chat messages. Google has therefore introduced Smart answer in 2017 who can write short automatic replies, and Smart composing in 2018 making suggested answers. Help Me Write builds on that.
Sundar Pichai shares a short demo via the company’s official Twitter account. When you open a blank email template, a new pencil icon will soon appear in the toolbar. This will open a short text bar where you will type the email prompt. The AI then creates a first version. If the first try isn’t quite right, you can ask to change the tone, lengthen or shorten the email, or start over. Then click insertion and the email is ready to be sent.
Unfortunately, Google is still not sure when it will start rolling out Help Me Write and all other Duet AI features. For now, they remain available to a limited US test audience. So you will have to write your own emails for a while. You can find out how to do this safely here.
To reduce the time we spend communicating, other platforms are also adopting AI tools. Microsoft also wants to integrate its Copilot into Outlook and has significantly expanded the test group this week. SlackGPT may soon be sending quick replies to Slack messages.
