The European Union plans to lay an underwater Internet cable across the Black Sea to improve communications with Georgia and reduce dependency on communications infrastructure passing through Russia.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources, Ukrinform reports.
The European Commission’s document states that 1,100 kilometers of cable will cost 45m euros. It was designed to connect Europe to the Caucasus and reduce “dependence on terrestrial fiber optic links passing through Russia”.
“The EU and Georgia tentatively agreed that this cable is a requirement in 2021, and the conflict in Ukraine gave additional impetus to the project, justifying the need to reduce reliance on ‘secure or unstable connections’.” The thread told this question to the broadcast.
However, the project is still under review and no funds have been allocated for its implementation.
“British telecommunications company Vodafone also has plans to lay an underwater cable to the Black Sea,” the report says.
His project, called Kardessa, will connect Ukraine to Bulgaria, Turkey to Georgia, and then go underground to Armenia, Kazakhstan and further into Asia.
