The sounds a car makes can tell an experienced driver many interesting things about the car’s technical condition. However, there is a whole category of sounds that you should not pay attention to at all. Portal “AutoVzglyad” talks about it.

Perhaps the most curious sound, exhausting all nerves, was once encountered by the author of these lines. At some point I discovered that on the road, at every turn, a quiet but clear “knock” comes from the steering column. Immediately thoughts came to mind about a quick and expensive repair of the steering rack, power steering, cardan joints …

But none of the auto repairers I contacted about this found any foul play in my car’s steering system. And it was only after quite some time that I accidentally discovered that I had put a USB stick with music in the small coin compartment under the steering column. And with every turn, she slid and “poked” loudly into the plastic sides of the bag…

No less radical sometimes the rubber suspension of the muffler under the bottom of the car “takes out the brains” for the car owner. Over time, it loses elasticity, and when driving through large irregularities, one of the “cans” of the exhaust duct begins to knock on the body. Hearing this, the motorist decides that the noises are caused by a failed suspension and begins to search in vain for a worn part.

On some cars with the engine running, if you stand next to the hood, you will hear a soft but distinct chirping sound from the engine. It accompanies the normal operation of the opening and closing nozzles of the fuel injection system.

If you’ve never paid attention to this sound effect, it’s easy to get excited about “something banging in the engine”. And hurry to nightmare military about finding an imaginary malfunction. Most of them will gladly pick out an already perfectly working engine at your expense.

Do you feel a “clap” when shifting from forward to reverse and vice versa? Don’t grab your head. Most likely, it is “slapped” against the body by the gearbox mounting pad. It’s annoying, sure, but it doesn’t affect anything at all.

When switching the “box” to move in the opposite direction, a soft click is sometimes heard from the front at the bottom (for front-wheel drive cars) or somewhere behind – for rear-wheel drive cars. You are not allowed to respond to these sounds either. In front-wheel drive vehicles, they are caused by a gap in the tripod bearing of the CV joint, and in rear-wheel drive vehicles in the gears of the rear axle.

Do not be alarmed if the car starts to click or crackle softly after the engine has been switched off. It cools the catalytic converter, everything is fine. The owners of some modern diesel cars at such times are sometimes disturbed by a not very strong, but clearly metallic rattle. It’s not some rusty monster that got under the hood. This is how the EGR valve works. Electronics move it to the closed position – as required when the car is parked.
