One of the main reasons for the increase in car thefts is the lack of spare parts and components due to a breakdown in logistics supply chains. Stolen cars are usually dismantled for parts and sold on car markets. The Interior Ministry warns that the situation could deteriorate noticeably in the coming months and that the peak of thefts will be in the summer.
The department’s report shows that 459 cars were stolen in January, 505 in February and 620 in March. That is, in the first month of spring alone, 22.8% more cars were stolen than in the first month of winter.
At the same time, the All-Russian Union of Insurers (RCC) reports that an increase in theft is also observed for insured cars – from January to March, 264 car owners were victims of such crimes. The kidnappers are particularly interested in the Hyundai Santa Fe crossover, followed by several LADA and Kia models.
