Rotten fuel tank: change to plastic or look for iron

Although the price of a new car in Russia has not fallen below a million rubles, the vast majority of motorists consider exclusively used options. And extremely slippery repair problems sometimes arise – for example, related to a fuel tank, which in our conditions rots in a matter of winters. How to solve this problem?

For many years the fuel tank was the standard iron. The fuel storage is flammable and, moreover, is adjacent to the exhaust pipe and to the brake mechanisms, which heat up nicely even in normal use. It is a so-so idea to store several tens of liters of gasoline in a conditional “plastic jerry can” next to such elements. In addition, in the hot sun, the fuel forms flammable vapors …

However, the iron “tank” has one extremely unpleasant feature – the nest has a tendency to rot. And quite quickly – especially if the driver, having read the “Internet”, gave him a protective plate. Of course, it will save it from a blow, but dirt and moisture will accumulate under it, which will contribute to corrosion. Put – put, but forget to clean. Kind of a vicious circle.

A good example is Mitsubishi Pajero, an extremely popular and respected SUV in Russia, which suffers from a congenital problem of accelerated decomposition of the fuel tank. If the car is already 10 years old, do not go to the grandmother: the tank has been replaced or it is leaking.

Faced with such a problem, the happy owner of a car is at a “crossroads”: buy a whole fuel tank at a disassembly – we do not offer new ones, there are no oligarchs – or buy a plastic tank. The latter is cheaper, has not yet been used, does not corrode and is generally beautiful in every way. It seems that there is nothing to think about at all. However, this solution is only at first sight successful.

The fact is that in addition to the environment, many other factors influence the gas tank. For example, few people think that gasoline itself is a solvent, albeit a weak solvent. How long does a plastic container last and when does it turn into a sieve? What if the manufacturer was too smart with the cost reduction?

We move on: the storage is located under the bottom and is subject to many different “misadventures” of the Russian road. Especially when it comes to an SUV. So: a firm pinch, a thick branch or a stone can turn an adventure into an evacuation overnight. But this is not the worst: the “beushka” does not allow to bring it to a new state. Even the most thoughtful maintenance – not only candles, filters, belts and oils, but also all gaskets, seals and other consumables – does not guarantee complete health even for 100 km.

An old car is old for that, that the lion’s share of the units are worn out. Also those that few people think about: have you ever heard of an absorber? Precisely. This thing is supposed to catch gasoline fumes. And if it malfunctions, a vacuum is created in the tank, which will one day simply compress the fuel storage. “Iron” will remain, but plastic …

In any repair, whatever it is, the original is the best option. Even used, from disassembly. If there are no options for getting a “factory”, look for plastic, but carefully read the reviews and do not try to save money. The miser pays twice, and in our case he also spends on a tow truck.
