Almost every driver has encountered a situation where when unscrewing the fuel cap at a gas station, the neck makes a terrible hissing sound. The AvtoVzglyad portal found out how dangerous is the air that comes out when opening the hatch of the gas tank.

This phenomenon, as a rule, occurs in two cases. First of all, due to the fact that the fuel pump “pumps fuel” out of the tank on the way, and no air enters the empty space. In other words, in action the effect characteristic of the pressure drop.

Or, on the contrary, the pressure increases due to the evaporation of fuel. This often happens after a long standstill of the car, when gasoline vapors are concentrated in the tank. In fact, this is the second reason for the appearance of an unpleasant hiss when opening the neck.

In fact, the operation of the valve and adsorber, which are configured to maintain pressure equilibrium in the fuel system, does not preclude a similar effect. But if the hissing takes on a sound more like a whistle, there is a risk that the valve on the neck of the gas tank is faulty.

Usually it just gets clogged, but it can be easily cleaned at any car service. But it is not worth replacing the adsorber in such cases. Firstly, it is much more expensive, and secondly, it is simply useless. However, the military often force motorists to replace it and clean the valve at the same time. I want to eat not only bread, but also butter. And even better with caviar.

However, there are also other dangers. For example, often a similar noise can indicate a malfunction in the fuel system. For example, if the notorious hiss is accompanied by a noticeable emission of vapors and fuel droplets. Much worse if, when unscrewing the hatch, gasoline erupts in whole waves. Here you should not hesitate – run to the technical center. And better – on a tow truck.
