The new toll highway Moscow-Kazan-Ekaterinburg-Tyumen, which is being built at an accelerated pace, will absorb several free federal highways. The draft of the relevant government decree has been published by the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.

According to the text of the explanatory memorandum, it is proposed to include in the payer an almost 400-kilometer section of the M7 Volga from Kazan to Dyurtyuli, from where the future M12 will extend to Yekaterinburg. The document says that there is a free alternative to this route – an almost 700-kilometer “hook” from Naberezhnye Chelny to Perm.

In addition, a fragment of the R-242 road from the city of Achit to Yekaterinburg with a length of 180 kilometers, as well as all 330 kilometers of the R-351 from Yekaterinburg to Tyumen, can be converted into part of the M12. These parts of the federal road network must come under the control of the state-owned company Avtodor by the end of 2024.

The significance of such a maneuver lies on the surface: the authorities want to save money on the construction of completely new sections of the toll road. Because it is cheaper and faster to reconstruct existing routes.

The further fate of the former national roads can develop in different ways. It is currently believed that even after being included in the M12 they will not be charged money from drivers for travel. However, no one promises that this position will not change over time: it is likely that eventually the entire M12 will become a toll road. Consider, for example, the M4 Don. At one time, the authorities did not hesitate to turn this main artery for cars, which runs from the central part of the country to the Black Sea, into a highway.
