No manufacturer will name the exact life of their tires – it depends on many factors, including driver habits, compliance with storage conditions and many others. On the sidelines and unofficially, they usually call five years, giving five hundred different objections at the same time. Basically, it was possible to find out the answer only in practice, which the AvtoVzglyad portal did. The experiment was long but interesting.

Every driver wants to know when to buy new tyres. This is far from a budgetary, but forced event, because everyone comes in different ways: someone loves to spin “doughnuts” and comes in line every season, and someone drives five thousand kilometers a year and sells the car before the tires be worn out.

However, most Russians have been driving a car for a long time, more than 10 years, so they regularly face the problem of buying a new set of tires. To make a profitable deal, you need to prepare by determining the period when it is important not only to choose a model, but also to save some money. And this requires at least average calculations, which we provide.

So, brand new tires produced in July 2015 were fitted to the car in March 2016. Before that, according to factory requirements, they were stored in a dark, unheated garage: vertically, on a rack. Then they were placed on discs from which they were never removed – two sets of wheels were mounted on the studied car. To complete the picture, it must be said that the rubber has gone overboard several times: worn valves have been replaced, the transmission between the disc and the tire has been treated. There are no cuts, punctures, hernias and other things to this day.

Since 2016, the car has covered 56,000 km – according to excerpts from the gas station. A small part – in winter, a large part – in summer. That is, only on the tapes under study. If, for ease of calculation, the spread is taken in the ratio of 40,000 km in summer and 16,000 km in winter, then this is more than reasonable. And exactly.

After the spring of 2016, the complete wheels lay in a heap in the same dark and cold winter garage, as the storage instruction prescribes. And in the summer they drove, albeit not too actively, through the city streets, rarely leaving the suburban highway, and quite a few times – on the dirt road. They didn’t flip the nickels, they didn’t pull the handbrake, but they still flew into the pits, they took speed bumps. Well, who, as they say, is without sin?

So given: an extremely measured driving style, a front-wheel drive D-class car, the environment is a city, the mileage is 40,000 km. A decent average that you can rely on. If we talk about the profile height, then it is still possible to drive tires for five years, no less, the first wear indicators are just beginning to wear out.

But the condition of the rubber itself already makes you think about finding a replacement. A high-quality, high-performance tire, properly stored and carefully operated, was covered in a web of cracks. A good hole – and be a hernia. Driving, especially over long distances, on such wheels is no longer safe.

In addition, when mounting the tires, they confirmed that the geometry was lost, and such a set of sinkers, as it is on one wheel, will be enough for the fisherman for life. This season will surely be their last. Eight years and 7 seasons were the result, despite low mileage, careful use and proper storage.

And, most importantly, the tire was originally of a high class, which today not all representatives of the tire shop of a car shop can boast. It was soft, rich in natural rubber. Not like the Chinese “import substitutes”. As a result, it was time, not roads and miles, that killed the rubber. When buying used tires with a still high profile, choosing a photo or trying to save money, you need to remember only one argument – rubber is cheaper than iron. Do not save, for 7 years you can easily save for a good, I emphasize, a new set of tires.
