Why motorists regret the days when there were more traffic cops on the road

Every year more and more cameras for automatic registration of traffic violations appear on Russian roads. At the same time, the number of traffic policemen who can see motorists “alive” is decreasing. But this process has not only obvious advantages, but also a rather serious minus.

Someone will say that the fewer traffic police inspectors on the road, the less corruption. Maybe. But replacing police officers with automatic restraint cameras is also not the best option. Because electronics gives a very truncated view of the event, actually taking a moment out of context. And on the basis of this fragment, the driver is fined.

For example, the vehicle in front suddenly braked sharply and, in order not to get into an accident, you had no choice but to change lanes sharply to the adjacent lane – through a continuous marking line. If this happens in the field of view of the automatic fixation camera, the driver will receive a penalty under the Code of Administrative Offenses. To respond timely and correctly, to avoid an accident. And if the witness to the maneuver was not soulless electronics, but a traffic cop, most likely it would not have cost a fine – a living person in uniform would have adequately estimated what happened.

Or let’s take the classic case of a forced stop at the side of the road – you turn on the “emergency gang” and you stand, without bothering anyone. You never know what happened: the car broke down, the passenger was carsick, the driver was bitten in the eye by a mosquito… In short, a forced stop. The camera on the post does not care about your problems: it takes a picture and issues a fine, since the work of the “emergency gang” is not visible in the black and white photos. And a traffic cop who witnessed such a “traffic violation”, again, would not have handed out a fine. After all, he is not a complex and understands what is happening on the road.

I must say that the reduction in the number of inspectors (actually replaced by traffic police cameras) is very pleasing to motorists who consider it possible to drive drunk. Electronics on a roadside pole don’t feel treacherous fumes! Police statistics claim that the number of “drunken” accidents with victims in Russia is steadily decreasing from year to year. We believe that this is solely due to increasingly well-equipped roads and passenger cars with advanced security systems in the country’s vehicle fleet.

The true picture of the negative impact of traffic police cameras on drunk driving can be traced by the number of drivers “registered” for drunk driving or refusing a medical examination, and it is pretty much stable. In 2022, approximately 478,000 relevant administrative cases have been filed. In recent years, this figure has remained at the level of “almost 500,000 per year”.

And this means that with a decrease in the number of inspectors “on the ground”, the average traffic police officer is more and more drafting such cases. There would be at least as many traffic police officers on the country’s roads as there were 10 years ago, the number of ‘drunk’ protocols would increase radically, and accidents caused by drunks would become less common.
