A small “industrial revolution” in the Chinese auto industry will take place almost tomorrow: the official start is scheduled for July 1, 2023. The automakers of the “Celestial Kingdom” have been actively preparing for it for a long time. And the Russian market will begin to feel its full impact in about six months.

All the fuss has to do with the new environmental standard, which will come into effect in China from July 1, 2023. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology ruled that from this date, any vehicle produced, imported or sold in the country on or after July 1 must meet China’s VI-b emissions standard. Most readers of this material have probably never heard of the existence of Chinese environmental standards. We don’t see them, but they are there.

China VI-b is currently the most stringent standard. It copies the parameters of Euro VI on most points. But it implies stricter test conditions for cars than in Europe and sets the requirement for the particulate matter content in the exhaust of diesel engines at a level not higher than 2×10¹²/kWh. Draconian requirements – compared to the China VI – a standard still in effect in China. True, local lawmakers took into account that, as a rule, Chinese automakers keep stocks of finished products in warehouses for about six months. These cars can be sold until December 31, 2023.

But what do we care about these internal Chinese “confrontations” with the environment?! And the fact that almost half of all new imported passenger cars sold in our country now go to Russia from China!

Some readers may have noticed that China’s auto industry has recently begun to switch almost entirely to platforms producing various types of “hybrids” and “electric trains”. One way or another, it is not particularly heard about the new “trolleys”, designed exclusively for internal combustion engines, in the Chinese passenger car industry. This is the preparation of Chinese automakers for the tightening of environmental regulations, which is about to happen to them. Yes, brand new cars equipped with a “clean” internal combustion engine will continue to travel from China to Russia for some time to come. But it won’t be long.

Deliveries to our market from there amount to hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year at best. These are microscopic volumes against the background of 30 million sales in the Chinese domestic market. None of the automakers will stick to producing sparse amounts of petrol and diesel models for our sake, with the rest of the production being mass “immersive” hybrids and electric vehicles. For this reason, very soon in the Russian market modern models of Chinese cars will be replaced by “hybrids”.

With us, a number of new electric vehicles will inevitably appear on the same platforms. But the volume of real demand for them in Russia is a rather debatable topic, so we certainly will not promise them crazy popularity. That’s why we are smiling, waving and preparing for the massive launch of various types of “hybrids” from China in our market.
