GAZ dealers are beginning to receive cars equipped with a new generation of power units – G-series engines that will replace Cummins engines. AvtoVzglyad’s reviewer was one of the first to drive a “live” car and compare the new product with its predecessor.

The new generation of Nizhny Novgorod commercial vehicles will be equipped with G-series diesel engines and the first vehicles are already being shipped to dealers. What is the new engine? The cast iron block and forged crankshaft need no introduction, as does the lightweight aluminum cylinder head. The engine is light, only 220-228 kilograms, depending on the modification. In addition, due to the design of the gas distribution mechanism with hydraulic compensators and belt-driven camshafts, diesel engines have low noise levels.

Technology is technology, but the application characteristics of the power source and the driving experience are more important. The high torque – 420 Nm – can be felt immediately, the car is lighter and more comfortable not only in city traffic, but also on the highway. The plant claims a 15% improvement in dynamics, and this is close to the truth. Power only increased by 7%, so the “herd” failed to pass the tax-friendly 150 horsepower mark. s. However, GAZelle NN has become an order of magnitude more cheerful than its predecessor.

Maksim Golovnov, Sales Director in the Russian Federation at Sovremennye Transport Tekhnologii Group of Companies, commented on the main development directions of the GAZ model line: “The efficiency of vehicle use is one of the main priorities for our customers and we provide optimal solutions for various types of freight transport.The new engine offers enhanced performance that delivers superior power, durability and vehicle dynamics, coupled with ease of maintenance, directly impacting the company’s overall profitability.”

An important aspect is fuel consumption. Among the many arguments about optimal calibrations and settings, high injection pressure and other technical terms, one should find a “grain” – consumption in the city rhythm of Nizhny Novgorod was about 8 liters. This result was unattainable with a Cummins engine. The new engine feels much better together with the gearbox, the car is easier and more comfortable to drive, and the power unit itself is more flexible and as close as possible to a passenger car in terms of sensations. By the way, a new color Azurro has also appeared, which is very “suitable” for Sable NN and GAZelle NN.
