Which “Chinese” is better: with a “robot” or with a “variator”?

An advanced motorist, before choosing one or another car model, compares not only the design, equipment and engine power of the cars he likes. He will certainly pay attention to the types of their automatic transmissions.

Robotic or CVT gearboxes are installed on most of the most popular models of Chinese passenger cars in Russia. It is with them that the typical Russian buyer of the “Chinese” most often deals. Globally, it is still difficult to objectively assess the reliability of both types of “heavenly” gearboxes: repairers have not yet collected adequate statistics of their breakdowns. But ceteris paribus, the “CVT” seems to be preferable if we intend to keep the transmission running for as long as possible without major repairs.

The main thing is to change the working fluid in the assembly more often than recommended in the “manual” and avoid sudden accelerations on asphalt and slipping on ice and mud. Also, under no circumstances should you use your car to tow anything. In this mode, the variator will live quietly for at least 200,000 km. But at the same time, you will have to accept that a car equipped with a variator “eats” more fuel, and a fair share of the energy generated by the engine is spent on the operation of this type of transmission .

The Chinese supply us with cars with robot gearboxes of the exclusive two-disc type. “Robot” – the most economical type of transmission of a car equipped with two pedals. But you have to pay for that, for example indestructible shock absorbers when shifting.

And also the “thoughtfulness” of most Chinese “robots”. In that sense, they are a far cry from their German counterparts, regardless of what their PR people say about this. These characteristics are especially evident when driving in a traffic jam. The presence of clutches and their drives in the “robot” makes a serious and expensive repair of such a gearbox almost inevitable for about 100,000 kilometers. At least that’s how it is with the Germans. Their Chinese counterparts are unlikely to boast a great resource. Rather, we can assume that it will be lower for Asian units.

Well, if the failure of the Chinese “robot” has a warranty period. In any case, this saves the car owner from large material losses. And impressive delays in the delivery of spare parts from China and the long repair times due to this circumstance can somehow be survived. The conclusions from the above are simple. If you buy a new Chinese car and plan to get rid of it before the warranty period expires, you can take a car with any type of box – taking into account the gluttony and not the best CVT dynamics. And also about good economy and a larger real “number of horses” under the gas pedal if there is a “robot” in the equipment of the car.

Well, when we plan to drive a vehicle without relying on a company warranty, it is still preferable to opt for a “variator”. With proper operation, it will not cause problems for the owner for a long time.
