Hardly anyone can afford a car dealership these days, so most car owners have turned to private service stations. And a simple MOT – one where only engine oil and filters are changed – you do yourself: a pit in the garage or a public viaduct, a few keys and a free evening – that’s all you need. Everyone has already learned how to remove the oil filter using the old accessory belt.
The decision is made, then the dance with tambourines begins or the purchase of spare parts begins: the original or an analogue, how to choose not to overpay and not to miscalculate? Many have not encountered this problem before, so they climb to read forums and opinions on the Internet, and there – Armageddon. Every author has his own opinion. The same air filter is not enough to choose, it must also be installed correctly so that it fulfills its task and does not damage the engine. Yes, yes, and it happens.
They have the old ones, but tons of dust that was inside or accumulated in the box can easily go not to the trash, but to the “pots”, damaging the fine structure of the internal combustion engine. The cast iron sleeve, for which the old engine is famous, somehow survives such an intervention, but modern coatings are unlikely. In fact, the air filter is necessary to remove all solid fractions from the air entering the engine. For a liter of fuel, a gasoline unit needs almost 15 kg of air, a diesel engine – 30 kg. Imagine how much dust and sand an engine can pump in a few tens of kilometers!
An air filter is used to protect the cylinders and pistons. We put a new one and go? It doesn’t matter how. First, the filter must be installed exactly, exactly according to the instructions, so that it does not pass. Secondly, if a special non-woven cloth is stretched over it from the factory, it does not need to be removed. This is not for the sake of beautiful packaging or protection during transportation – this is an additional filter element, which, among other things, shows the driver the degree of wear of the consumable. The fabric has turned black – it needs to be replaced.
You probably knew that in nature there are different types of “air” designed for different kilometers, up to 100,000 km? Well, you’ve probably also heard about the fact that car manufacturers are slowly starting to calculate the need for maintenance based on engine hours, and not miles on the clock. The internal combustion engine consumes air even at idle, and at this point the miles don’t really add up….
