The recent introduction of the BYD Dolphin, one of China’s BYD’s most affordable electric vehicles, seems to have had a significant impact on the Brazilian electric vehicle market.

The recent introduction of the BYD Dolphin, one of China’s BYD’s most affordable electric vehicles, seems to have had a significant impact on the Brazilian electric vehicle market. This is because the affordability of the car compared to others has driven car prices down in the country, with Caoa Chery leading the race by dropping the price of their iCar to R$20,000.

With the discount, the iCar, now priced at R$139,990, is low enough to regain its position as the cheapest electric car in Brazil. In addition, some dealerships are offering the model at an even lower price of R$129,990 thanks to an additional R$10,000 bonus offered by Caoa Chery.

The BYD Dolphin, despite being a compact car, is the same length as the VW Polo, at 4.1 meters. It features tire pressure monitoring, heating, power front seats, front parking sensors, electric mirrors and more. Its electric motor delivers the equivalent of 95 hp and its 44.9 kWh battery provides an estimated range of 291 km.

Caoa Chery wasn’t the only company to react to BYD Dolphin. Jac Motors also reduced the price of its E-JS1 from R$145,900 to R$139,900, with a R$6,000 discount. However, Renault has kept the price of its Kwid E-Tech still priced at R$149,990.

BYD is also investing in the construction of 3 factories in Brazil.

However, the arrival of the BRL 149,800 BYD Dolphin was just one of the news that shocked and affected the electric vehicle market in the country. This comes as the company said it will build three factories in Bahia, one of which will be dedicated to hybrid and electric models. In addition, the company has partnered with 99 to make 300 BYD D1 electric vehicles available to app drivers in Sao Paulo.

The introduction of the BYD Dolphin and the subsequent drop in electric vehicle prices in Brazil are indicative of the growth and competitiveness of the electric vehicle market in the country. With more affordable options available, more consumers are expected to consider buying an electric vehicle.
