A first aid kit has long been registered in every car. To have it dictates traffic laws. However, after numerous and futile attempts to optimize the content, they achieved the “desired” – now it’s not good at all. And drugs were completely excluded from first aid.

How clearly can you imagine what an in-car first aid kit is for? Surprisingly, not everyone will give the correct answer to this simple question. Most are sure that a box with a red cross is necessary to pass a technical inspection without any problems, which has now become an atavism in itself.

Some naively believe that the contents of the first aid kit will help them, if the opportunity arises, to heal from summer ailments – hangovers, insect bites, burns or migraines. And only the most advanced know: first of all, you personally need a first aid kit in order to quickly and competently provide first aid to the injured on the road. And the equipment is especially important, because you yourself can be such a victim.

Until 2010, until the new “pharmacy” regulations came into effect, the contents of the first aid kit somehow corresponded to the tasks set. There was also bandages and sterile wipes and the simplest disinfectants in the required assortment. There were even some pills for basic pain relief and heart attack relief. However, in July 2010, the situation changed. It was as if a tornado had passed through the first-aid kit, and the box itself with a red cross on its side began to fit not only in the “glove box” of the most modest dimensions, but even in the pocket of the door trim, where previously only a pack of cigarettes could feel comfortable.

What happened? Smart minds, the developers of the regulations of the Ministry of Health, took care of us in the traditional way. Since we ourselves are our main enemies, they have decided to cut off our ability to provide medical care to ourselves. They acted on the main medical principle “do no harm”. Everything was removed from the list of medicines, including part of the dressing material, an athermal bag, tablets and antiseptics for external use.

List of mandatory parts of a car first aid kit: disposable medical mask – 2 pieces; medical gloves – 2 pairs; sterile gauze wipes – 2 packs; tourniquet to stop bleeding – 1 piece; artificial ventilation; narrow gauze bandage – 4 pieces; wide gauze bandage – 3 pieces; adhesive plaster – 1 roll; scissors – 1 piece; First aid instructions – 1 pc.

In the event of an accident, there was actually little left: a bactericidal and roll-up plaster; several non-sterile and sterile bandages of a very inappropriate width in case of a serious accident; a hemostatic tourniquet, often reminiscent of an elastic band of panties; scissors of disgusting quality, with which you cannot cut not only a tight trouser leg, but even a transparent bandage cannot be sawed through; latex gloves; artificial respiration device – an overlay on the nasolabial triangle, supposedly preventing the exchange of fluids between the “doctor” and the patient …

In fact, only bandages remained, and antiseptics and analgesics evaporated. The main and only reason for such expropriation was the statement about the very low medical education of the population and its unwillingness to provide qualified medical care to its neighbour. Suppose the drugs have contraindications and expiration dates that no one observes. However, the car pharmacists’ argument went even further.

It turned out that according to the law, a person who is not entrusted with professional medical authority, precisely in the process of providing assistance, has no right to give medicine to the victim, even with his consent, the patient. Simply put, a plumber, a diver and a ventilator who accidentally drove past the scene of an accident during his off hours will be criminally punished if an anaphylactic shock or an allergic reaction arises from his iodine gauze or aspirin tablets.

If so, if alone! Have you seen many such deadly nets or Quincke’s edema of analgin? I ask you this as a doctor who once worked in intensive care. And how many resuscitators travel across our vast expanses so easily to deny them at least some timely and qualified medical care?

Okay, the rescue of the drowning man, as we say, is the work of the drowning man himself. In January 2021, the Ministry of Health has included new parts in the first aid kit. Guessed? Two gauze masks appeared. True, experts from medicine nevertheless somewhat optimized the obligatory set, with the exception of not quite suitable positions, devoid of practical use.

To replace the already existing “wrong” first aid kits, motorists were given time until the end of 2024 and allowed to form an individual medical arsenal at their own discretion, not to mention the period that can be obtained by allowing the unconscious participant in the accident to breathe like a bat.
